Windows let in the light and when open, they let in fresh air. They should not let in outside air when they are closed. If you can feel air coming through, or around your closed windows, air is getting out too, and that will affect your heating and cooling costs. That means it s time to have them replaced.
If your home was built in the sixties, you may have aluminum windows with a thin single pane glass. That type of window is hardly better than having an open hole in your house. Those definitely need to go, so what do you replace them with?
You unquestionably want dual pane windows. They provide a barrier between indoor and outdoor air, in addition to providing protection from the sun. Have you ever noticed furniture and carpeting closest to your windows seeming to have faded more than those away from it ? That s because they have been damaged by the sunlight that has penetrated through the window. Double pane windows can alleviate some of that direct sunlight damage. Additionally, they can reduce the outside noise you hear inside your home. Dual pane windows really do provide a protective barrier between the inside and outside of your home.
What do you need to hold those dual panes?
Vinyl windows come in a wide variety of textures and colors to match your homes exterior. They come with burglar deterring locking features. Some even have vent locks. That means you can open the window a little for air, but lock it in place for security. You re going to probably want the thinnest frames available since they will need to fit over the old frames, and you will want to lose as little glass as possible. This isn t a problem with vinyl windows. They can normally be tilted or even removed for easy cleaning.
Vinyl windows are made of a plastic, much like vinyl siding, which makes them very easy to care for; and they are resistant to the damages like rotting and warping which commonly affect wooden window frames. Additionally, vinyl windows last a long time. In addition, if expense is an issue, vinyl windows are relatively inexpensive.
Higher in price is another type of window called the casement window. Its design is like that of a door, where the window is stationary on one side and loose on the other. The loose side opens outward with the use of a crank. Opinions seem to vary sharply about this type of window, and just as with everything, they do have advantages and disadvantages. However, casement windows seem to be very popular and the more popular brands of casement windows are Pella, Marvin, and Anderson.
If your old windows feel like ice, if you can feel the breeze through your closed window, or if you simply don t like your old ugly windows, consider window replacements. You can choose from vinyl windows, casement windows, or something altogether different. It all depends on your taste, desire, and budget. Whatever you choose, just be sure your installer is certified to do the work required.
